Embrace Your Ancestors: New Moon Reflections

Welcome to this month’s new moon blog, where we delve into the profound connections we share with our ancestors, especially during this new moon phase. As we approach Valentine’s Day, it’s a beautiful opportunity to honor those who came before us while celebrating love in all its forms.

Conversations with the Dead

This blog is dedicated to exploring the connections we have with our ancestors, particularly for those of us in North America. Many may feel disconnected from their lineage, particularly those of us with European or white ancestry in North America.

Calling Upon Your Ancestors

How can you begin to call upon your ancestors? You might consider drawing, writing, or painting as mediums to remind yourself of their presence. Engage with the past—close your eyes, breathe, and focus. What do you see, feel, taste, or smell? Take a moment to breathe and relax. I like to start by lighting a candle and saying a blessing or prayer to purify the space. Then, I call upon my ancestors and ask my guides to join me.

Lunar Influences

Currently, the moon is in its balsamic phase, waning to new. We are in the darkening time of the month and amidst the darkness of winter. This is the perfect time to delve into ancestor work and receive messages from the other side. Approach this practice with an open heart, while setting clear boundaries—do not invite ancestors or guides who are unhelpful or unkind. They are not welcome unless their messages are constructive.

Embracing Elderhood

Having turned 60 this past year, I've entered a significant phase in life—the second Saturn return. This time often marks a final maturation, prompting us to examine our legacies and our relationship with death.For many white folks in North America, this can be a tricky subject; we tend to shy away from it. Unlike some cultures that venerate their ancestors with marigolds, chrysanthemums, and statues during celebrations like Day of the Dead, we often overlook these practices.

Discovering Hidden Treasures

It’s time to uncover the hidden treasures of our lineage. By knowing our ancestors and their stories, we get to know ourselves better. Your treasure awaits—are you brave and curious enough to seek it?

Signs and Synchronicities

Look for synchronicities; let them guide you. Write them down. How does the blood in your veins sing to the blood of your ancestors? In what ways are you the same yet different? Consider how you got here and what your ancestors desired. Soothe them by acknowledging your connection.

Ask your ancestors what they want. Open your heart and fill the silence with their presence. They are speaking to you in their love language. Once again, ask them what they desire. Don’t expect immediate answers, but you might receive feelings, ideas, touches, or scents. You have opened the door—welcome them in. That is enough for now.

A Personal Note

This year has been filled with deep creative grounding as I return to practices that have long been part of my life—zines, handmade books, and journals—while also exploring new creative challenges inspired by Echo Publishing, starting with Dec. 26-Jan 6 Omen Days. I’ve been trying new practices this year: junk journaling, painting while listening to a friend’s new EDM creations and podcast: Kosmix Horizons, and experimenting with Tombow dual brush watercolor markers and Caran d’Ache pastels. Alongside this, I’m creating Spell Cat drawings with focus and intent, which I’m now shaping into a series of small postcard sets.

Integrating the Shadow Through Dreamwork and Tarot

Integrate Your Shadow

This has been the Year of Dreaming for me.

Previously, since around age 13, I kept a dedicated dream journal, recording only a handful of important dreams each year—those that deeply resonated. Since beginning a much more devoted dream practice and recording all my dreams, I have written down 150 dreams since November 16, 2024.

With each dream, I record the feeling associated with it and pull a tarot card from my new Siren Song Mermaid Tarot deck. For especially important dreams, I also note and tally additional details: moon phases and signs, recurring cards, repeated feelings, symbols, and images.

So far, the Balsamic Scorpio Moon has proven to be my most prolific dream time. My husband, Mark, appears as the most recurring symbol. When I was using a traditional tarot deck, the Five of Wands appeared most often; when working with my own Mermaid Tarot (Major Arcana only), the World and Star cards recur again and again.

Shadow Work

The purpose of this in-depth dreamwork is Shadow Work—understanding and uncovering my shadow, then integrating it so I may become healthier, more whole, and more holy. Once one begins this work, change can happen surprisingly quickly.

I also record synchronicities, as dreamwork naturally leads to greater awareness on many levels.

I began this practice after speaking with—and attending—an experimental Dream Workshop hosted by my good friend, astrologer Chad Woodward.

Dream Tips

Always keep a dedicated dream notebook and pen by your bed, ready to record your dreams immediately upon waking.
Write a quick note about how you felt during or after the dream.
Later (or even before sleep), pull a tarot card for your dream.
I personally do this afterward, when I tally dreams alongside moon phases, signs, and recurring themes.

Integrating the Shadow

I have noticed that my shadow dreams and nightmares shift and change as I begin to understand and integrate my shadow. The shadow is the part of us that has been hidden or repressed.

This practice has helped me face my fears and find my truth. I feel more whole and more in tune with the universe.

To Dream or Not to Dream?

If you don’t remember your dreams or don’t write them down, do not fret—this practice is not for everyone.

Dreams were my entry point into psychic work and becoming a psychic medium. They have always guided me; this is my gift.

In offering psychic soul readings, my wish is to help you uncover your gift—for we can all awaken our intuition and become more whole, creative, and aligned.

The Chase

She is my second favorite mermaid but turned out she was the most popular with my customers! I love her because I am she - a red headed mermaid! She also reminds me of my best friend at the time, Tangerine, a lovely red head who was also a favorite model for the artists in Laguna Beach. Plus, I have a thing for redheads! My best friend growing up is a redhead and so is my husband!

Lazy Day

Who IS LuLu?

Who is LuLu?

Lulu was created when I was in graphic design school in the early 90's. My best friend Jamie and I created alter egos and mine was called LuLu. I also really needed a friend during crazy alone times to keep me company so I drew LuLu as a cartoon with friends: Zippy and Hermès (the cat). She became my inner child.

Within one week of graduating from design school I had moved to Montréal, got engaged and moved to Corona del Mar, California!

I was lucky enough to devote myself full time to my inner child; LuLu. She is my child. I never gave birth to a human child and knew I never would. I knew that my creations, my art and my pets would be my children.

So, when LuLu was 'born' in design school I was also, in a way, following in the footsteps of my paternal birth grandfather whom I had not yet met. His name is James Simpkins and according to Seth the cartoonist he was the creator of the most well known and beloved Canadian cartoon character of the twentieth century in Canada; Jasper the Bear. I had known my grandfather's work since childhood as one of his illustrations was on the back of a beloved children's book I owned.

I met Jim, my grandfather several times before he died. I found my entire birth family when I was 27. James was still drawing in the senior residence when I met him for the last time. He had a wall devoted to cartoons and I was on there with my art! His room was filled with Jasper memorabilia; statues, books, videos, etc and a drafting table where he worked, just like mine. He proudly showed me my photo and work on his cartoon wall. He was still cartooning; putting up nasty funny cartoons around the residence to try to get folks to stop smoking.

LuLu was my nod to him—from one cartoonist to another—although I never considered myself a cartoonist. I didn’t work with narrative or storytelling… or did I? I told this to my dear friend recently, and he told me to look up the lyrics to the Waterboys song “Trumpets” (whom I just saw in L.A.—woot!) and then try to tell him I didn’t do narrative!

I have been telling stories—creating narrative—my whole life, and LuLu is the story of my inner child growing up. And now she is leaving home. How can I ever let her go? But it is time. It is past time.

I became an artist after moving to California at age 25, after meeting my husband-to-be in Kingston, Canada. He was sailing in the Olympic Trials (CORK), and I just knew I was going to meet him that night! He was the one who convinced me I could actually be an artist and make a living at it—and so I did. It turned out that Laguna Beach was the perfect place to be!

I had a huge breakthrough during my first Saturn Return, around age 30, when we all experience that major, life-changing astrological transit. I experienced a rebirthing session, and my entire business plan for LuLu Design came to me. I began silk painting because I absolutely fell in LOVE with the colors and the intensity of the dyes on silk. I started selling my work at art and craft fairs, then to galleries and shops. That’s when my LuLu in Laguna series was born, along with my years of participation in the two-month-long Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach.

Well, now it’s 30 years later, and I’m 60, moving through my second Saturn Return. It’s time to lighten the load as I prepare for the last third of my life. I need to let go, and I need to say goodbye to LuLu as I make room for new creations and adventures—time to move on and move forward. I have lived and loved as a full-time artist my entire working career, and I thank you all for supporting this journey. I could not have done it without you.

Above is my first Sawdust Festival art booth in 1993. The booth had to be built up to fire code - it's a serious business! I had a hand laid antique brick floor, antique beams and refurbished windows, so cute!Later on my booths would all have second stories so I could climb up, take a nap and store stuff - handy 'cause this show ran 10am -10pm every day for 2 months long.

This was my vision of life in my 30s: Laguna Beach, painting silk, playing with mermaids in the sea, surrounded by pet loves and my lover, living in paradise, making art and making a living from it—what a blessing! And now it's time to let that go. I feel lighter already.
