Channeling Persephone: Spring's Rebirth

Kathy Crabbe, Spring, 2002, acrylic on wood, 6 x 8".Kathy Crabbe, Spring, 2002, acrylic on wood, 6 x 8".

It's the New Moon in Aries and it's a powerhouse Moon with six planets in Aries; firepower indeed to kick off the Spring Equinox; so, set your intentions, bless them, then let them go.

Lately, a good friend (an astrologer) and I have been working with the Persephone archetype in various ways, but it wasn't until the other day, after setting up my Persephone altar that I was able to connect with Persephone deeply through channeling. Just in time for the first New Moon of Spring, but first I'd like to share with you the Persephone Myth and NOT the well known patriarchal version which you probably already know.

I do not like or resonate with the standard version of the Persephone myth; it's complicated, negative and depressing. I do resonate with the pre-patriarchal version of Her myth and would like to share it with you. This version was written by ecofeminist philosopher Charlene Spretnak and is based upon the classical scholarship of Jane Ellen Harrison, Louis Farnell, Sir Arthur Evans, and others.

The Myth of Persephone

Demeter and Persephone share the bountiful fields, enjoying the beautiful earth, and watching over the crops together. One day, Persephone asks her mother about the restless spirits of the dead she has seen hovering about their earthly homes. "Is there no one in the underworld to receive the newly dead?" she asks. Demeter explains that she rules over the underworld as well as the upper world, but her more important work is above ground, feeding the living.

Reflecting on the bewilderment and pain she has seen in the ghostly spirits, Persephone replies, "The dead need us, Mother. I will go to them." After trying to persuade Persephone to stay with her, Demeter relents: "Very well...We cannot give only to ourselves. I understand why you must go. Still, you are my daughter, and for every day you remain in the underworld, I will mourn your absence."

Persephone gathers three sheaves of wheat and three poppies, favorite flowers of Demeter, takes the torch that Demeter has prepared for her, and begins her descent down into a deep chasm into the underworld. After a long journey, she comes to a place where many spirits are milling about, moaning. She moves among them, and after preparing an altar, she beckons them to her, saying, "If you come to me, I will initiate you into your new world. You have waxed into the fullness of life, and waned into darkness; may you be renewed in peace and wisdom."

Meanwhile, Demeter has grown sorrowful, her bountiful energies draining from the earth, leaving it barren, with no crops growing to feed the humans. After some months, Persephone decides she will return to the upper world. As she approaches her mother, the flowers of the earth rise up in joyful song, and as Demeter and Persephone run to embrace each other, the birds and animals begin to sing, "Persephone returns, Persephone returns." And as the mother and daughter dance and dance, new growth springs up in the fields, and the humans join in the rejoicing.

Each time Persephone goes back down into the underworld, the mortals share with Demeter the bleak season of her daughter's absence; and as she rejoins her mother in the spring, they are renewed by the signs of Persephone's return.

Channeling Persephone ~ Rebirth

Today, in honour of the New Moon in Aries I created my usual New Moon Circle, and was surprised to find myself a wee bit down (considering all that Aries Firepower in the air), so I called upon Persephone in conjunction with the pulling of a Rune and asked for her help.

As Persephone and I fly above the earth, she says to me, "See, down there, there are scores of people  dying as they live, but we can't help them because  they are choosing life in death. And you, are you dying?"

Me: No, I'm not, I want to help!

Persephone: Then let's go on. "Print this, and you die," she says with a smile. "You see, dying isn't anything to fear; let it go...let it all go."

Me: But losing someone is.

Persephone: Come, let's continue. What do you see?

Me: I see people living, loving, planting, and dying, really dying.

Persephone: And yes, no cliches from me...I'll keep my mouth zipped. Let's fly on.

We stop and rest.

Persephone: What do you see when you see me?

Me: I see a woman, a goddess, of many-changing hues.

Persephone: Look again, what do you see?

Me: I see Me.

Then, all of a sudden I am She and so completely filled with bliss that my eyes fill up with tears.

Me: "How can I serve?" And I answer my own question: I can paint, with joy and abandon and love and passion and anger and rage and fury; the world. I can share my words and visions, and heal and commiserate and burn with Divine Bliss;

The fire, the water, the air, the earth,

And bless all (that is and is not) for I am reborn.

Blessed Be, and thank you, Per seph onee.

Discipline Required - Brainstorming in Process!

Stone Basket. Pastel & pencil on paper, 8 x 10 inches. © 2012 by Kathy Crabbe Discipline seems to be a key word for my process right now. The key is keeping Facebook time low! The computer world is insidious; it creeps into your life quickly and it stays there.

Each morning I sketch outside (plein air is the fancy French term for it) and have been focusing on still lives rather than landscapes as of late. My 2B pencil is put to work although I need to find a 6H to get really serious ;) It feels like I'm in training right now (athletic discipline required).

I'm also brainstorming; giving my corpus callosum a work out for a couple of prints I'm conjuring for an exhibit called Verse to Image at the Riverside Community Arts Association Center. I chose a quote about rebellion from Chris Hedges' book, Death of the Liberal Class and a poem by Margaret Atwood titled The Poet Has Come Back; both reference death. Somehow printmaking brings out the darker more political side of life for me. Prints are due mid March and making an etching can take a while so I'm digging in and going deeper with Atwood's poem for starters; perhaps the two will tie in somehow. I hope to post some photos here in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Quotations of Interest (originally posted on my Facebook page this week)

"Unfortunately, many works sold at art fairs, and in the global market in general, promote cultural cliches or personal brands...Formatted for private collection spaces and museum galleries, this art is too often totally predictable and non experimental." ~ Hou Hanru, Art in America, Nov. 2011

"College Art Association is at the LA Convention Center. CAA is a front for Goldman Sachs student loan scam to keep young creative people broke and enslaved in debt. CAA is the Monsanto of Art, complicit in crimes against creativity. Top that rant!!!" ~ Matt Gleason (who was expelled from every school he attended according to his Facebook Info page...hmmmm, not surprising really, is it?)

"All we have, as Vaclav Havel writes, is our own powerlessness. And that powerlessness is our strength. The survival of the movement depends on embracing this powerlessness. It depends on two of our most important assets—utter and complete transparency and a rigid adherence to nonviolence, including respect for private property. This permits us, as Havel puts it in his 1978 essay “The Power of the Powerless,” to live in truth. And by living in truth we expose a corrupt corporate state that perpetrates lies and lives in deceit." ~ Chris Hedges

The Medium Next Door – Maureen Hancock, Adventures of a Real-Life Ghost Whisperer

The Medium Next Door by Maureen HancockI'd like to introduce you to ghost whisperer Maureen Hancock, author of the new book, The Medium Next Door.

An Interview with Maureen Hancock

1. How did you first realize you had the ability to communicate with the dearly departed?

As a child, I had lead paint poisoning and was in a coma. I spent three years in and out of Boston’s Children’s Hospital. When I came home from the hospital at the age of Five, I could see spirits roaming around my house. One of my sister's said they would take me back to the hospital if I kept talking about “The invisible people,” so I shut it off. Cut to 1992, I fell asleep at the wheel and broke several bones in my face, including a fractured skull. After the accident, I didn't need any surgery and I believe my recently deceased grandmother was watching over me. I then started to hear voices from beyond while volunteering with cancer patients.

2. You are truly, “The Medium Next Door.” You’re a wife, mother of two young boys—a soccer mom with a twist. How do you explain what you do to your children and how do you balance family life with the demands of your work?

My children are very open to spirit and the work I do. When they were younger, they couldn’t understand why I left the house with amplifiers and microphones to do shows. When my younger son was Six, his teacher asked each of the students what their mother did for a living. My son proudly exclaimed, “My mother’s a rock star.” Now, we talk openly about spirits and their guardian angel in heaven—their cousin, Sean.

It’s not easy balancing my work and being home for the kids. My top priority is being here for my children. I make sure I’m home four nights a week, helping with homework, cooking and eating at the table (like when I grew up). Family time is so important. I do most of my non-profit work during the day when they are in school and perform to sold-out crowds three nights a week.

3. You are co-founder of two charities. Tell us about them.

"Seeds of Hope” is a foundation that provides support for those suffering with debilitating and terminal illnesses. We provide holistic healing support such as massage, Reiki hands on healing, reflexology and meditation. I help clients with their fears of death and help them pass with less pain and fear. We also support parents who have lost children through support groups and private sessions. This work is all offered free of charge.

My other non-profit is, “Mission for the Missing.” It was co-founded with a private detective two years ago. We offer help to families of children and adults who are missing and/or murdered. The detective is a ground-search coordinator and together we facilitate large-scale searches incorporating the efforts of many volunteer teams such as cadaver dogs, divers, horses, atv’s, Fish and Game, State Police, ground searchers and more. We also offer training scholarships to dogs for continuing education, as well as equipment needed for searches. I use my intuitive skills to assist in search efforts and receive calls from all over the country for assistance.

4. You help authorities in various cases, including missing children and adults. Tell us about that.

I receive requests from various parts of the country now on missing persons and murder cases. Currently, I’m assisting a female homicide detective in North Carolina on a few cases. More and more law enforcement divisions are opening up to using mediums and psychics to assist on cases, especially when the case goes cold. I also belong to a few private investigative associations in New England, and assist on cold cases. I’ve also helped find missing dogs and worked on a missing horse case (who loses a horse?)

5. Tell us about your work with parents who have lost children. We understand you don't charge for these private sessions.

Other than my work with the sick and dying, helping parents who’ve lost children is a top priority for me. I receive at least 10 new requests per week from parents who have recently lost a child. Since my sister, Rosie’s son passed, we decided to work together to help other parents to go on after the devastation of losing a child. Rosie runs a support group that meets monthly at my office and I provide free sessions to connect families for closure and peace. It feels really good to say I never charge for my private medium sessions.

6. You grew up in a strict Irish Catholic household. How does religion come into play with your work? Are there people who say this is "devils work?"

It was very hard for me to find the right words to tell my mother, a devote Catholic and playfully called, “Head of the God Squad,” that I was communicating with spirits. It didn’t take long for my mother, who is my best friend, to come on board and be my biggest fan. I trust and believe in my heart that my ability is strengthened in faith. I have been witness to many miracles and profound healing. Over the past year, I’ve had 4-5 Catholic priests and nuns attend my demonstrations. I was even asked to speak at a Catholic Church. My visit was stopped by the efforts of one “Bully” Catholic who attacked me in her “spiritual, loving” blog. She called the Cardinal, Bishop and no-doubt, a deceased Pope or two. She wanted to give me an exorcism in the church parking lot. To watch the face of a parent who has buried their child, go from extreme grief to smiling with a knowing that child is happy and at peace, is anything but evil.

7. We understand your nieces also have this ability. Are they like the "Sorcerer’s Apprentices?"

My nieces, Anastassia and Candace, are both “Mediums in Training.” After Anastassia’s brother, Sean, passed, they both started communicating with him and began helping other people. I didn’t have anyone to help me understand and embrace my abilities, so I made it my mission to assist them in learning how to handle the stresses that come with the territory.

8. You've been a witness to many deaths. In your experience, what happens when someone dies?

Maureen Hancock

Well, I won’t exactly know until I get there, however, what I’m shown and told by numerous spirits is that the moment we pass, all of our relatives and friends who have passed before us are waiting for that ultimate reunion. I’ve been present when many physically leave their body, and often, they are reaching out and calling to a parent or spouse who is waiting to take their hand. I’ve seen people in comas or non-verbal; begin to talk and say, “Can’t you see them? They are standing right there.”

Spirit tells me that not long after the physical death, they are shown their, ‘Book of Life,” which acts as a life review manuscript, so to speak. We are shown our triumphs, challenges and failures. Depending on how we lived our life here, will determine the level we are on in heaven.

9. How are some ways our loved ones in spirit try to communicate with the living?

There are many ways our spirit loved ones try to communicate with us. The most popular is through dreams. Almost everyone, skeptic or not, can confirm they have had a dream of a deceased friend or family member. These dreams stay with us as lasting memories for years to come. Spirits also use things such as coins (pennies & dimes) to remind us they are with us. Sometimes they use familiar scents (clairoma) to make their presence known. Some other signs include songs on the radio, lights or anything mechanical going off, random phone calls and even texts from heaven! Birds, butterflies, dragonflies and hawks are also important reminders of spirit.

10. You are a former stand-up comedienne (sometimes referred to as the "Comedian Medium") how do you incorporate humor with such a heavy subject matter?

I think what differentiates me from many other spirit mediums is that I believe our loved ones in spirit enjoy coming through with a celebration of life and not reliving another wake. Being a former stand-up comic, I enjoyed making people smile and forget about their daily stress and heartache. When I bring through a spirit, often times the validations are so on point (names, dates, exact way of passing) the person loses it and starts to weep, sometimes uncontrollably. It is at this exact point of the reading that I jump in with humor and help the person left behind know that it’s okay to continue living, laughing and celebrating these great memories. After all, laughter is the best medicine.

Maureen Hancock, Medium, Ghost Whisperer

11. Is there a heaven and hell?

I believe we create our own heaven and hell, depending on our attitudes, actions and inactions. Being Catholic, I was always taught about heaven and hell. For me, I do believe there is a heaven…a place where there is unconditional love, non-judgment, and profound peace. I believe the “bad people” resonate at a lower level based on the free-will choices they made.

12. Are you constantly hearing voices? How do you shut it off?

When I first realized I had this ability (which I do believe we all have), I constantly heard voices. I couldn’t sleep for months and I hated what was happening to me. It took me a long time to figure out that I could control the voices, and use a “switch” to turn them on and off when I chose to. Now, other than the occasional “drifter” in the super market, I decide when I’m going to tune in and tune out.

13. Obviously many people are skeptical about what you do. How do you handle the skeptics?

I'm a former skeptic. I refused to go to psychics when my friends would try to get me to go to either do tarot cards or tea leave readings. It's not my job to convince anyone. I can deliver the info and let them process it and decide for themselves. I've turned many skeptics into believers by giving very detailed information. My job is to deliver detailed information and hopefully, plant the seed of hope.

14. Tell us about your television show? What do you hope to achieve by being on TV?

I'm so excited about the TV show. I have an outstanding team of producers, Sander & Moses who executive produced the Ghost Whisperer, as well as some great producers from ABC Medial Productions and Disney. I'm traveling around the country, stopping in small towns offering my assistance with a variety of "matters" such as assisting detectives on missing person cases, helping a family who has lost a child, helping people to understand death and using my humor to deliver impromptu readings all over town.

15. You have a new book out. What's the book about and where can viewers get the book?

My new book, "The Medium Next Door" is about the adventures of a real life ghost whisperer. It's basically part memoir about my life as a medium, yet I'm just like your next door neighbor…only I hear and see dead people. I write about my work with the sick and dying, helping people pass, assisting detectives to help find missing children and adults, and some profound readings that have changed families’ lives. Each chapter has a reflection or suggestions to apply to your own life for healing and knowledge.

A Healing Message Reading for a Beloved Pet

This reading was done for a very beloved pet belonging to a client of mine. I was so very honoured and touched to be a part of the loving and soul-touching connection between a pet and her owner. I look upon my own pets as my children in a way, yet I also do my very best to give them the freedom to be wild and true to their own animal nature. I treat our connection as a bond between soul-friends, friends that I hope to be reunited with when I cross over to the Other Side. My Client's Initial Request: I am partnered in this life with a sweet, loving greyhound named Annie (Annie the Serene Queen). Three weeks ago she was diagnosed with invasive fibrosarcoma. She has a fist-sized tumor on her left hip that is inoperable given the fact that she is a 12 1/2 year old who would not tolerate the wide excision and probable left leg and partial pelvis amputation that might slow the destruction. I won't put her through that at this stage in her life.

She does have a wonderful holistic vet and, in addition to pain medication, has prescribed a custom Chinese herbal formula, Chinese dietary therapy and an acupressure point recommendation. I am following that, spending time outdoors (as the evolving spring will allow) and giving lots of good rubs and tons of kisses.

My expectation is not "healing", as in cure...but "healing" as in opening our hearts to their full potential to accept our destiny and to be filled with the grace, love, appreciation and acceptance of and for the time we have shared and will, hopefully, share again. My hope would be that she could experience peace of mind and body..release of her anxiety and discomfort..and be able to live the best life that she can have until she departs for the Rainbow Bridge. I want her to be able to feel my deep love and respect for her. I want her to not worry about me.

I don't know if you can help her...and me.

I want you to know that I really appreciate being given the opportunity to tell you about her...she is remarkable. She is my *heart* dog. I will miss her forever.

Thanks, in advance, for your consideration.

A Healing Message Soul Reading for Annie, 'The Serene Queen.' *This reading is being shared with client permission* The first thing I sensed in your reading was Ramon, popping in! And I’m going to call him ‘Ramon the Nipper!’ He does seem to be hanging about, looking out for Annie and looking forward to playing with her too.

- I also see a big red (Valentine Candy) kind of heart, bigger than both of you and it is like it’s being placed over both of you.

- I am also given an image of Egypt (perhaps some kind of past life connection for Annie?)

- I hear laughter, your laughter…and I can tell that it will help carry Annie over to the Other Side, when it is her time.

- She is so aware of you – you can communicate healing and love to her telepathically (and you probably already do.)

- I suggest working with a gemstone called “Blue Topaz” for cooling and healing.

Blue Topaz aids in expressing one’s emotions and needs. It promotes sharing and communication, as well as learning and mental perception. It has a calming and soothing effect on the emotional body and can facilitate the communication of one’s deepest feelings and one’s highest truth.

- I see Ramon again, and he is SO impatient and excited to see Annie – he is just running all over.

- I also suggest working with Angelite (Anhydrite) for help with dreaming.

Angelite (Blue Druzy - light blue) aids meditation and psychic healing. It promotes empathy and compassion for all life and it calms and comforts as well as aiding oneness and the realization that we are never really alone.

- Working with this stone (and the color ‘Angelic Crystal Blue’) will help make the transition smoother – you can work with this stone by placing it under your pillow and under Annie’s bedding.

- I also suggest working with Jet – for crying (on your own, afterwards.)

Jet is used to banish all negativity in order to clearly hear one’s intuition and inner light.

- For Annie, you can reassure her as you are petting her, that you won’t cry, and that you are there for her – and you can tell her this telepathically as well.

- At some point, she may be overly sensitive to everything and the gentler and quieter you can be, the better.

- You can show her a mental image of Ramon and fields of green grass and of you there also.

- If you are feeling tired or weak, I suggest working with a Yellow Citrine point – This will help energize you, so that you can be strong for the both of you – she wants to know that you will be okay.

Next, I sense that we need to call upon a Goddess so I pull a card for you from my Goddess Zodiac Power deck and it is called “The Capricorn Goddess.”

Capricorn is represented by the color blue-violet and the musical tone of “A.” Capricorn seeks integrity and to accomplish Great Works. Capricorn knows all about self-discipline, common sense, logic, patience, persistence and self-sufficiency.

- This card reminds us that this transition is one of beauty, because change isn’t always easy, but it is necessary.

I pull another card for you from this deck and it is called “The Gemini Goddess.”

Gemini Affirmation: I am a dancing, rainbow spirit: I let go easily and quickly. I communicate well and teach that skill to others. I seek the unexpected, I listen, I flood my senses with stimuli.

- This Goddess will help you prepare.

- Things will start to slow down (with Annie) and when she is in pain she will leave her body, she is staying around to give you time to say goodbye and when she is ready, she will tell you with a look.

- You already know that only love matters and love never dies.

- A little bit later, I was still meditating and thought that this reading had ended, but I came back to it again, I just knew I wasn’t quite finished with it!

A Healing Exercise for You (for afterwards)

- I want you to imagine yourself placing Annie in the arms of God/dess (the Great Spirit), knowing that she is safe and still proud (Queen that she is) and don’t forget to blow her a kiss now and then too (she’ll feel it!)

My Client's Response: Thank you for your email...I have so many thoughts!

I am SOOOOOOO relieved and happy to know that Ramon came through. I called him Ramon the Jester because of his "out there" personality. He had the biggest personality of any greyhound I have ever met!! He had a love and exuberance for life that was so beautiful! He was a big frolicking, rollicking fawn boy who adored everyone he met...and was the biggest mama's boy to me. He was my oooey goooey love muffin.

Ramon was 4 years old when he died a sudden and very violent death. He and Annie and I were out walking the path skirting a wetland behind my house. He was strolling along with me and it was the loveliest Fall day. I let down my guard and, while focusing momentarily on Annie, I allowed his leash to drift out of my hand. He took a few steps away, and as I walked towards him to regain control of the leash, he walked just enough ahead of me (turning back to look at me with his teasing grin) that I could not ever get to him. At one point, he turned away from me and bolted down the path and up onto a road. Annie and I ran screaming for him to stop. Before we reached to top of the path, I heard a big thump and one sharp cry. He had made it across the street but on the way back to me he was struck by a car. He was standing by the side of the road when I got to him. I put my arms around him and started feeling for injuries but he was physically perfect. Within moments, he collapsed down and I wrapped my coat around him. The man who hit him agreed to take us to my vet hospital and I sat in the backseat with Ramon in my arms. Annie was in the front seat...but she climbed into the back and laid on top of him with her face by his face. During the ride, he started gasping and as we pulled into the parking lot Ramon took his last breath. He died from severe internal bleeding.

He is home with me now, in a beautiful urn. I want him here.

I have always been troubled by the fact that Ramon has never come to me. I have never felt his presence and I have never seen him in a dream. I always wondered if the trauma of his death...and the fact that I didn't protect him from it...played a role. I will never forgive myself for squandering the greyt gift that i had been given. I was charged with protecting him and I failed.

To know that he surrounds Annie and will be there for her is so comforting...I can't tell you. And to know that he is still his jubilant self makes me smile through my tears.

Annie had a very peaceful night last night. She seemed calm and comfortable...and that is not always the case. This morning, while walking, she even trotted a little...slowly...but did her little "head shake" that always indicates that she is so happy! She is resting now after her breakfast.

I will take your suggestions to heart....and work very hard to try to put my grief aside when working with her.

As I told you..Annie is my *heart* dog. Ramon was my *soulmate*.

There is never enough time.

I love the image of a big heart encompassing us. It's beautiful.

Thank you, Kathy, for all of your kindness and intuitive insights.

I will be forever grateful to you.
