Tamara’s days are filled with homeschooling her two boys (7th year now!) and making and selling art plus all of the other things that are included in family life. But it wasn’t always easy to find time for art.
Ever since Tamara was a little girl of three of four she was drawing. She continued to be absorbed in art and art making all through her school years and eventually went to art school out in Atlantic Canada where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts.
After graduating, Tamara began shooting weddings, as photography had been her major at art school. Once married and with children she took care of her kids, worked part-time and shot weddings. She loved photography but the long hours were not always enjoyable and eventually began to weigh on her and she felt something was missing. After years of frustration she finally decided to quit shooting weddings and start creating art again.
This was not an easy thing to do. Drawing did not come easy at all. The white page was incredibly intimidating and it took many years to get back into the groove of things. Pinterest was a huge help at getting the art brain back and she created an art inspiration board for when she got stuck. Now that her children are older and more independent it has been easier to carve out time to create as well. That has made a big difference and her kids and husband get so excited when she sells a piece. That support is so magical.
From time to time Tamara paints with her non-dominant hand. She is a natural lefty so using her right hand helps her to loosen things up and get out of her ‘perfectionist’ clothing, so to speak. She often will fingerpaint with one hand (a lot of her paintings are partly done with fingers) and then switch to the other hand to get into spots that would be harder with her left hand. This can be easier since her painting space is small and it’s not always easy to turn the canvas around and around.
Creating with her non-dominant hand has helped Tamara to let go, to loosen up in her work and that means being less critical as well. It’s freeing! It’s fun!
